Parenteral Nutrition (PN) is a complex, high alert medication prone to a variety of potential errors. Recent changes to clinical practice have increased the number of PN prescribers from various disciplines. To ensure safe prescribing of PN, a standardized model for PN competency should be utilized. This webinar will describe the American Society for Parenteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.) model for standardized PN competency and provide additional guidance for safe PN prescribing.
- Identify selected competencies pertinent to parenteral nutrition prescribing to optimize delivery of safe and effective therapy.
- Describe the A.S.P.E.N. model for PN prescribing to train and assist in privileging the following healthcare professional: Physicians in training (residents and fellows), medical students, and nutrition support RDs, NPs, PAs, clinical nurse specialists, and nutrition support pharmacists.
- Discuss steps toward achieving a culture of safe PN prescribing based on evaluation of individual patients and achieved by multidisciplinary collaboration between physicians, dietitians, nurses, and pharmacists.
